Pipe Inspection Procedure
Visual Inspection :
- Check for any surface defect and overall product quality.
- Check weld for welding defect such as porosity, undercuts etc.
- Check pipe for mechanical marks, lamination, tears etc.
- Acceptance of defects are as per applicable standard.
Dimension Inspection :
- Dimension of pipe to confirm.
- ASME B36.10 – Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe.
- ASME B36.19 – Stainless Steel Pipe
- Following to be confirm during inspection – Diameter , Length , Thickness , Straightness , Ovality , Weight , Permissible Variations depends on manufacturing standard.
Marking Inspection :
Following shall be marked on pipe –
- Manufacturer logo
- ASTM material code
- Material Grade
- Size
- Thickness
- Length
- Heat No
- Special marking WR or NH

Marking Methods :
Marking can be done by paint or by hard punching.
For stainless steel stenciling can be used
- for carbon steel no hard punching below 6 mm thickness.
- for stainless steel no hard punching below 12 mm thickness.
